Sexton for Nurkić
Hornets receive: Collin Sexton and a 2030 second-round pick
Jazz receive: Jusuf Nurkić
This trade came as a surprise to many, and in my opinion, the Charlotte Hornets clearly came out on top. The Hornets seem committed to building a competitive roster around their young core of LaMelo Ball, Brandon Miller, and Miles Bridges. Acquiring Collin Sexton gives them a tough, high-energy guard who can contribute immediately and fits well with their timeline.
Sexton’s contract of $18.975 million for next season before he hits free agency is manageable for the Hornets, who still have plenty of cap space. Adding a future second-round pick in 2030 only adds more long-term value to the deal. Sexton’s hustle, scoring ability, and all-around game should complement the Hornets' backcourt rotation nicely.
On the other side, the Utah Jazz’s decision to trade for Jusuf Nurkić is puzzling. With Walker Kessler already showing promise as a strong, developing center, bringing in Nurkić who is set to make nearly $20 million next season may disrupt Kessler’s growth. Nurkić is no longer in his prime and hasn’t shown the same level of impact he once had during his time in Portland.
