Milwaukee Bucks sign: Myles Turner

Damian Lillard waived

This signing came as a surprise, but it may ultimately benefit the Milwaukee Bucks. By waiving and stretching Damian Lillard’s contract, the Bucks will now pay him $22.5 million annually over the next five years, significantly easing their cap situation. In return, they receive Myles Turner, a premier shot-blocker and a reliable three-point shooter, making him an ideal fit alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo in the frontcourt. Turner, currently on a 4-year, $107 million contract, gives Milwaukee much-needed defensive presence and spacing. This brings a young and talented center to fill the role of Brook Lopez who signed with the Clippers.

That said, the move reportedly didn’t sit well with Giannis, who seemed unhappy with the decision to part ways with Lillard. It raises questions about the Bucks’ internal alignment and whether they’re maximizing the championship window with Giannis still in his prime.

For Damian Lillard, the future is uncertain but far from over. Despite a torn Achilles that will likely sideline him for the entire 2025–2026 season, interest around the league remains high. Several teams are likely exploring options to sign him, knowing that his leadership and shot-making could still make a major impact once he's healthy.

In hindsight, the original Lillard trade may go down as a misstep for Milwaukee. They gave up assets, only to move on from Dame a year later, while still owing him significant money over the next five years due to the stretch provision.

Overall, the Bucks gain financial flexibility and a better defensive fit with Turner, but it comes at the cost of star power and locker room chemistry. Meanwhile, Lillard’s journey takes another unexpected turn with teams surely watching closely for his eventual return.
